Toothache?

Dental Health

National Toothache Day on February 9th is thought to have originated from The Feast of St. Apollonia (the Patron Saint of Dentistry). Toothache is not generally considered something to celebrate; in fact, toothache usually makes us miserable. But Cheltenham based dental practice Illume would like to promote this as a day to raise awareness on the prevention of toothache.

Tim Rumney, practice owner and clinical director at Illume, says: “Many people will quite rightly feel that toothaches are unwelcome and wonder why anyone would want to focus attention on them.

“Here at Illume, we want to use this day to remind clients of the importance of maintaining good dental hygiene all year round so they can do all they can to prevent toothache.”

Toothaches aren’t always considered serious, but they can be a sign that something is wrong with your teeth and gums. You could be experiencing pain or sensitivity in or around your teeth, sharp shooting pain when you bite down or even throbbing and constant pain. Tooth decay will usually be the chief cause of toothache and it is something which will not simply get better of its own accord and, if left untreated, will get worse.

“I would urge all clients with toothache to see a dentist as soon as possible in order to seek diagnosis and immediate treatment,” added Tim.

Toothache can be avoided altogether through regular dental care and good oral hygiene. Teeth should be brushed a minimum of twice a day in the morning and evening and it’s also important to change your toothbrush regularly and use a good quality fluoride based toothpaste. Limiting sugary food and acidic drink consumption will also protect teeth from decay and enamel erosion.

So don’t let toothache ruin your day, please call us on 01242 522230 and make an appointment to see us now.
