National Stop Snoring Week, launched by the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association, is designed to raise awareness of the many effects that snoring can have. Cheltenham based dentists, Illume, are able to offer a solution to improve snoring with a snore guard, more correctly called a Mandibular Advancement Device.
Snore guards (Mandibular Advancement Devices) can help with 'tongue based' snoring. They work by moving the lower jaw (mandible) forward and holding it there during sleep. This pulls the tongue away from the back of the throat and soft palate and helps maintain a more open airway.
The sound of snoring can be irritating and annoying and can lead to sleep deprivation or sleep disturbance, daytime sleepiness and loss of function for both the snorer and the sleeping partner which in turn can result in relationship problems.
Tim Rumney, practice owner and clinical director at Illume says: “Figures from the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association show that 41.5% of the UK adult population or 15 million people in the UK snore but the actual numbers affected are more like 30 million people because it is often sleeping partners who suffer the most.”
“We offer a variety of custom made snore guards, starting with relatively simple plastic ones to more sophisticated metal ones and believe it is always better to invest more in a professional appliance that will fit more accurately and comfortably and is adjustable than something ill-fitting and bought ‘off the peg’,” added Tim.
