European Gum Health Day on May 12 is an international awareness day that aims to alert everyone to the seriousness of gum disease, the health problems associated with it and the importance of maintaining healthy gums. Cheltenham based dental practice, Illume, is calling on the community to back this campaign to raise awareness of gingivitis and periodontitis.
Tim Rumney, Illume practice owner and clinical director, says: “We are always encouraging our clients to be gum health curious and this international awareness day offers an opportunity to reinforce the message about the seriousness of gum disease.
Gingivitis occurs when the gums around the teeth become red, inflamed and swollen, In susceptible people this can turn into Periodontitis. Periodontal disease often known as gum disease is a very common problem, yet many people do not even know they have it. Some of the signs to look out for include gums bleeding easily or even spontaneously, receding gums, teeth that are loose or wobbly, a discharge of pus or bad breath.
People who smoke, have diabetes or a family history of gum disease are also more at risk. Gum disease cannot be cured once and for all – instead it has to be prevented, controlled and managed with regular care.
“Here at Illume we give the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum disease top priority,” adds Tim.
Good gum health is an essential foundation for good general health, long-lasting teeth and underpins all other dental care. For more information about gum disease visit our gum health curious page.
