With the start of the new school year in a month’s time, your children or grandchildren will probably already be equipped with a new uniform and school supplies. Illume would like to remind clients how important it is to wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports.
Alison Rumney, non-clinical director at Illume, says: “Over the years, we’ve seen too many scary photographs of broken teeth following sporting injuries where people weren’t wearing a guard.
“We believe that prevention is better than cure – if you wear a sports mouth guard, the likelihood of you needing treatment for teeth damaged or knocked out during sporting activities is greatly reduced.
Even a minor fracture can result in permanent damage and once damaged a tooth may never fully recover and even minor damage can eventually lead to the nerve dying – and this may be many years later. The insurance that Illume members have for accidental damage requires a mouth guard to be worn when playing contact sports.
“We offer custom made mouth guards from a specialist laboratory. We take impressions of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit and these are so much better, more effective and more comfortable than shop bought ’boil in the bag’ models.
If you’d like to book an appointment for a guard, please call us on 01242 522230. We need 15 minutes to take some impressions and the guard is usually back from the laboratory two weeks later. It’s therefore a good idea to make the first appointment now so that the guard is back and ready for the new term. Fees start from £70 for children and £93 for adults and we think this is a better investment than having to pay for treatment to rebuild broken teeth.
